Must-know rules
Wyoming sends every commercial vehicle through a Port of Entry, with a PrePass green light skipping it only for loads that aren't livestock, oversize or overweight. I-80 and WYO 28 chain laws are posted live by WYDOT with no fixed season. Wyoming has no statewide handheld-phone ban beyond texting, though Cheyenne and Powell ban handheld use. I could not confirm anything on idling limits, a weight-distance tax, or tunnel hazmat bans, so those topics are left out.

- Must knowPort of Entry stop requirement
All commercial vehicles, transport operators, livestock haulers and deliveries into Wyoming must stop at a Port of Entry on entering the state. A PrePass in-cab green light lets you continue only if you are not hauling livestock and not oversize or overweight.

Carry an IFTA license, Wyoming registration or IRP with Wyoming at the correct weight, and a USDOT number for interstate moves. Intrastate moves need Wyoming operating authority (307-777-4850). Instead of IFTA/IRP registration you can buy a one-trip permit at the first Port of Entry: IRP $20 per unit (max $40), IFTA $7.50 per unit (max $15).

Fees and DOT requirements
Wyoming's CDL fee is a flat $55 for any class. Commercial registration is by gross weight, with a state fee that rises about $27.50 for each 2,000 lb bracket, and Wyoming-based trucks pay a county fee on top. Intrastate for-hire carriers need a one-time $50 WYDOT operating authority with no renewal. I found no official source for CDL validity, the CDL renewal fee, knowledge-test or endorsement fees, emissions programs or a weight-distance tax.
- Class B CDL
- $55 for 4 years (about $13.75 a year)
The $55 is the WYDOT-listed fee for any class of CDL, so it is the same for Class B and Class A. The commercial skills test is $85 (an operations manual summary describes it as $80 plus a $5 technology fee). A commercial learner's permit is $45. The CDL renewal fee is null: third-party sites say $40 Source - Class A CDL
- $55 for 4 years (about $13.75 a year)
Same fee schedule as Class B: $55 for any class of CDL, $85 skills test, $45 commercial learner's permit. A class upgrade fee is null: third-party sites give conflicting figures ($20 or $40), and I found no official figure. The 4-year validity is from non-official sources only. - How registration is figured
- Commercial vehicles pay a state fee by gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight, set in a table in W.S. 31-18-401. A combination is registered on its gross combined weight. A county registration fee based on the vehicle's value (a percentage of factory price that declines with age) is added
The amounts are the state weight fee only, from the table in the statute text I found (2024 edition), which may have been amended since. The 26,001 lb figure is the 26,001-28,000 lb bracket and the 80,000 lb figure is the 78,001-80,000 lb bracket. County fees are extra and vary with the vehicle's value; I found no dollar figure for them. - Wyoming Operating Authority (letter of authority; for-hire carriers hold contract motor carrier authority). $50, one-time.
W.S. 31-18-201 bars intrastate operation without WYDOT authority. For-hire carriers, meaning anyone paid to haul within Wyoming, apply for contract carrier authority with a $50 filing fee. Private carriers with any unit over 26,000 lb also need authority, at $50. Contract carriers must also have liability insurance filings (Form E) and cargo insurance filings (Form H) if applicable. WYDOT rules say permanent authority stays valid unless revoked for good cause or cancelled by the holder. Each power unit must carry a copy of the current letter of authority.
